| | | | | Musical Therapy for the Spirit, Mind & Body
Selected: (Hymns, Oriental Classics and Western Classics) By: Dr. Pearl Yeh & Dr. Timothy Yeh Yeh Center of Natural Medicine, Inc.
| | | | 1. Introduction For centuries doctors have recognized that Sound & Music are necessary factors in the treatment of diseases. An example of this can be found in the way a mother sings to her baby to induce sleep. It has also been established that letting a baby listen to his mother's heart beat, whether at her bosom or listening to a tape recording, will lull the child to sleep. listening to good or lovely music brings excitement, happiness, calmness, anger releasing, tension relieving, mind clearing, peace, relaxation, reverie, positive, love, devotion, powerfulness ---etc., to people. In contrast, bad or noisy music will cause changes in the breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, tiredness, headaches, bad appetite, ulcers, irritation, bad emotion, depression, hot temper ---etc.. The value of music can be traced back into ancient Biblical times. For instance, the depression of King Saul was relieved when David played for him on the harp. (I Samuel 16:14--23) "But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the lord troubled him. And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee. Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player n a harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well. And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me. Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him. Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep. And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid and sent them by David his son unto Saul. And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer. And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight. And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took a harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed , and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him." David expressed his happiness by playing musical instruments. (I Chronicles 15:16) "And David spake to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers with instruments of musick, psalteries and harps and symbols, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy." David also expressed his gratitude to God through praise and song. (I Chronicles 16:4--10) "And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of the Lord, and to record, and to thank and praise the Lord God of Israel: Asaph the chief, and next to him Zechariah, Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obededom: and Jeiel with psaltries and with harps; but Asaph made a sound with cymbals; Benaiah also and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God. Then on that day David delivered first this psalm to thank the Lord in the hand of Asaph and his brethren. Give thanks unto the Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works. Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord. The teaching of (e.) Psalm 150 "Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.", clearly reveals the use of different musical instruments to praise God's power, love and glory. And we learned a wise Greek Pythagorean stopped an angry general from killing his enemy only by striking one chord on his musical instrument. Chinese well known artist and author Auo Yang Xiu played music to drive away his own depression. Goldenberg's music helped the insomnia of Katharine Knight. In England, doctors found the use of music beneficial in treating Schizophrenia. Japan, the Russia and many European countries employ the use of music to alleviate pain during the delivery of babies. Dentists in Sweden value the use of music for their patients enjoyment and relaxation while dental treatment is being given. The use of Music Therapy began in America in the decade of the Fifties. In China there is a large Music Therapy Institute, located in the Wu Nan Province. According to a recent news report it helps hundreds and hundreds of patients with high blood pressure, insomnia, depression, anxiety, liver diseases, certain kinds of heart diseases, hormonal disorder, pain, arthritis, etc.. In the Russia & England, people in the milk business let cows listen to the soothing music while they are milking, the result is more milk than from cows which do not have music. Sound and Music, used properly, can treat diseases or enhance the health of the human body. The following information is presented to give us a better understanding of how sound and music can be used in therapy.
| | | 2. The Physical Properties of the Sound and Music We know that sound travels through the air via a sound wave frequency, and this is motion. Sound waves are compressional waves. A compressional wave must be produced by vibrating matter. For instance, if one speaks, the vibration of one's vocal chords produce compressional waves into the air. That is, whe one speaks, air is compressed to different degrees and radiates away from the source (like when a stone is dropped into water and the ripples radiate out). In many cases, the medium in which the wave travels is air, this is why sound waves cannot go through a vacuum. They can be transmitted only by the movement of the air's compression at a given rate of change or frequency. These movements are picked by the human ear. First, the sound waves strike the ear drums, and then pass the vibrations to the middle ear and inner ear bones. The inner ear is filled with a special liquid. The auditory nerve fibers are located in this liquid. As the waves enter through this inner ear liquid, the auditory nerve fibers can sense them and send the vibrations to the auditory nerve. The mechanical vibration is transformed to electrical impulses and sent to the auditory center of the brain. The brain interprets and decodes the information and translates this data into a sense of sound. It is a very complicated physiological process. Sorry to say, modern science of today still cannot explain it clearly in a totally comprehensive way. Different sound waves have different frequencies as well as different wave lengths. As frequency increases, wavelength decreases, and the equation for the sound wavelength is as follows: Wavelength = Velocity / Frequency The velocity of sound at 0° centigrade in dry air is about 322 meters per second. Sound goes faster in warm air (because warmer air is less dense) than in cold air, so sound's velocity at 20° C is around 344 meters per second. In water (at 25° C) it's near 1500 meters per second. The unit of frequency is Hertz, (Hz) and 1 Hz means one vibration (cycle/wavelength) per second. The human ear can detect a range of frequencies between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz. The intensity of sounds is expressed by using the decibel (db) scale. The intensity of sounds is related to the pressure of sound on the eardrum. Under typical conditions, a common person has a "pain" threshold at around 120 decibels (an ambulence siren). Usually we say a loud clap of thunder or a chainsaw is around 110 decibels. If a sound is hardly heard, the pressure of it is 0 decibels. The pitch of sounds depends on the frequency of the sound waves. Sound with high pitch has high frequency. Sound with low pith has low frequency. For example, the pitch of the voice of a lady is usually higher than that of a man. We won't understand music well unless we understand sound well. Some knowledge of sound will help us to understand music better. In general, if there is no pattern of frequency of the sound waves, or there is no clearly defined pitch, this kind of sound is consider just noise.
| | | 3. GOOD MUSIC Confucious was a great Musician as well as a great philosopher. He stated that the quality of music could rank one's moral or a kingdom's governing. And he also noticed that good music could make one's character perfect. He said, "The noble minded man's music is mild and delicate, keeps a uniform mood enlivens and moves. Such a man does not harbour pain or mourn in his heart; violent and daring movements are foreign to him. What is good music? Scientifically, it is the rhythmic sequence of pleasing sounds. Literally, music is a universal language that we may use to talk onto the strings of one's heart. Music can open one's deepest mind toward brightness. Music can nourish people's physical or mental needs. Music can also reflect the greatness. beauty, wisdom, harmony and power of the universe by our Creator. We won't understand music well unless we understand sound well. Some knowledge of sound will help us to understand music better. Therefore, we always need good music for our physical, mental and spiritual health. Please be advised that good music enhances good health. Don't let your ears hear bad music.
| | | 4. THEORETICAL & MEDICAL ANALYSIS IN MUSIC The Oriental Music was developed around 1400 - 1100 BC. In the beginning they developed five basic musical notes. Actually, the Chinese found that these five basic musical notes were sound waves originated from the vocal cord to different parts of the throat and oral cavity. For instance: 1. Sound produced from the vocal cord then passing between the teeth, belongs to the "Wood". It is "Chiao" which is "Mi". "Wood" in Oriental Natural Medicine to the music indicates: "Steadfast", "firm", "Shooting Up", "Flexible", "Clever", "More Emotional", "Peaky", "Swaying", "Moving". 2. Sound produced from the vocal cord and vibrating in the middle part of the oral cavity, belongs to the "Fire". It is "Chih", which is "Sol". "Fire" in Oriental Natural Medicine to the music indicates: "Strong", "Warm or Hot", "Vigorous", "hyperactive", "fiery", "Positive", "Disclosed", "Clear", "Stimulating", "Lovely", "Shinning", "Powerful", "Dynamic", "Sympathetic". 3. Sound produced from the vocal cord and coming through the throat, belongs to the "Earth". It is "Kung", which is "Do". "Earth" in Oriental Natural Medicine to the music indicates: "Growing", "Developing", "Abundant", :Rich", "Constant", "Continuous", "Solid", "Mindful", "Thoughtful", "Ideological", "Meaningful", "Happy", "Heavy". 4. Sound produced from the vocal cord and then vibrating through the front part of the oral cavity, belong to the "Metal". It is "Shang", which is "Re". "Metal" in Oriental Natural Medicine to the music indicates: "Drumy", "Clean", "Clear", "Serious", "Golden", "Bright", "Shinning", "Admirable", "Encouraging", ""Loud", "Transparent", "Sad". 5. Sound produced from the vocal cord and vibrating between the lips, belong to the "Water". It is "Yu", which is "La". "Water" in Oriental Natural Medicine to the music indicates: "Streamery", "Watery", "Flowing", "Clear", "Quiet", "Calm", "Cool or Cold", "Soft but energetic", "Continuos", "Hiding", "Pure", "Juicy", "Nourishing". There are no semi-tones in a five tone scale (or Pantothenic scale). More developments were taken later on in Oriental Chinese Music. They produced twelve musical tones with Semi tones. This Chinese system used end-blown bamboo tubes (lu) as the source of pitch data. One of the most fascinating facts is that both Chinese and Western systems emerged with a circle of fifths (the fifth is a musical interval such as C to G in the West). The Chinese created twelve tones that were mathematically correct, but not equidistant musically. The twelve tones can approximately correspond to the twelve notes of the Western Chromatic Scale. Musical melodies, either simple or complex, have their regular waves and can make pleasing effects on the ear and to the brain and then from the brain to different organs of the body. We also know every musical sound has a characteristic called "Quality". This "Quality" helps us to differentiate the sound of the same pitch and volume. For instance, we can very easily differentiate the sounds of the same pitch produced by a Chinese guitar, western guitar, Chinese harp, western harp, Chinese lute with seven or five strings and the western piano. Referring to Oriental Musical instruments, in "Chinese Poem Classics" (BC 484), it mentions about seven kinds of instruments. Between 907 and 960, "The Period of Five Dynasties", string instruments were developed. (See Fig. 4,#1) Between 960 and 1279, during the Shong Dynasty there were different kinds of pipes. (See Fig. 4,#2) Between 1368 and 1662, the Chinese violin was developed. (See Fig. 4 ,#3) These musical instruments give beautiful but different sounds of music, and have established the unique Oriental music. For your curiosity, we want you to see different kinds of Oriental musical instruments. For your enjoyment, we have been developing Oriental Music. And for your good health, we have analyzed many different arrangements of Oriental Music and have put some of the very best ones together in our Musical department for your benefit. If we compose these twelve Musical tones uniquely with the five elements, organs and meridians, western musical notes and each sound frequencies, they look like a map guiding us to understand how the sound and music are related to our organs. | WESTERN NOTES | CHINESE MUSICAL TONES | PROPERTY OF MUSICAL TONES | SOUND FREQUENCY | ORGANS RELATED | | Do C | Huang Chung (Yellow Bell) | Earth | 262 | Spleen | | C# | Da Lu | Earth | 280 | Stomach | | Re D | Tai Zu | Metal | 294 | Lung | | D# | Jia Chung | Metal | 311 | Large Intestine | | Mi E | Ku Xi | Wood | 330 | Liver | | Fa F | Zhong Lu | Wood | 349 | Gall Bladder | | Gb | Shen Bin | Fire | 370 | Heart | | Sol G | Lin Chung | Fire | 392 | Small Intestine | | Ab | Yi Ze | Water | 415 | Kidney | | La A | Nan Lu | Water | 440 | Bladder | | Bb | Wu She | Fire | 466 | Pericardium | | Ti B | In Chung | Fire | 494 | Triple Warmer |
| | | 5. PHYSIOLOGY & PATHOLOGY OF ORGANS & VISCERA MUSIC THERAPY IN ORIENTAL NATURAL MEDICINE ORGANS and VISCERA Words like "organ" and "viscera" are considered to be Western terms, but the Chinese have had these words in Oriental Natural Medicine for over 4,000 years. They are responsible for naming them: heart, liver, spleen. lung, kidney, etc. Because the Chinese used these words first, their original meanings were quite different from the present usage in the Western conventional medicine. In the oriental Natural Medical vocabulary, the word "organ" is quite different from the word "viscera". These words in the Western world apply generally to the inside of the body. However, in Oriental Natural Medicine these words and their meanings are kept quite separate. "Viscera" is a "viscera", and an "organ" is an "organ". According to Oriental Natural Medicine, the body has five organs. The heart, liver, spleen, lung, and kidney make up this category. But, the pericardium is often listed as a separate and distinct organ. Although the pericardium surrounds the outside of the heart, it is not included with the heart because of the distinct pathological changes that occur to the pericardium independent of the heart. The Chinese list six under the category of "viscera". They are the stomach, gall bladder, small intestine, large intestine, urinary bladder, and the triple warmer. Besides this list of "viscera" there is a special group called the "wonderful and the permanent viscera." It includes the brain, marrow, bone, vessels, and uterus. Of these wonderful and permanent viscera, the brain, marrow, bone and vessels belong to the organ category. The uterus is totally independent of either group. The five "organs", and six "viscera" and the "wonderful and permanent viscera" are the three histological structures that form the human body, according to Oriental Natural Medicine. The physiological activity of this whole organic body is based on four things: essence, energy, blood, and liquid. These four materials are used up by the activities of the physiological functions of the organs and viscera, but at the same time they are unceasingly and continually supplied and produced. The Chinese classified them into three separate categories, because of the true meaning of each word. In the Chinese language the word "organ" means "storing", and the "organ's" function is to store essence and energy. The word "viscera" means "coming and going", so the six "viscera" handles or controls the digestion, absorption, and elimination. The "wonderful and permanent viscera" also literally means "very special." This is a very special group because its form is equal to the "viscera." However, its function is equal to an "organ." The function of the five "organs" and six "viscera" are different in their specialties, but they have some similarities. Although they have different functions and effects, these are not totally separated without interconnections. Among the five "organs" each can help or control each other, which produces a balance among the five. The six "viscera" have a relationship of receiving an cooperation. Because of the compatibility of the members of the "organs" and the "viscera", there is a tendency of an external and internal relationship of coexistence. The five "organs" and six "viscera" are also closely related to the structure of the limbs (which is composed of muscle, skin, vessel, tendon, membrane, and bone) and the outside organs (which are composed of the eyes, ears, mouth, nose, tongue, genitals, and vagina.). This relationship is concerned with to whom it controls or to whom it belongs. This relationship connects the outside to the inside and the inside to the outside as one working unit.
| | Now let us see one by one the organ or viscera with the music:
| | | | 1. THE SPLEEN WITH THE MUSIC. A. PHYSIOLOGY. The spleen governs the blood. This means the spleen maintains the blood running normally in the vessels, not allowing the blood to leak out in the intestines for digestion and absorption. It transports the nutrients and essences to different organs and to all parts of the body. Therefore the Chinese say, "spleen and stomach are the base of the life after birth." The spleen lords transformation and transportation which consist of two functions: (1) The spleen absorbs the nutrients and essences from the food digested through the stomach, and lifts them up to the heart and the lungs, through the functions of the heart and lungs. The nutrients and essences mat be transported to the whole body. (2) The spleen transports the liquid and regulates the water metabolism. It lifts up the liquid and essences from the stomach to the lungs and from the lungs to the whole body. Two lifting-up functions of the spleen are its specialty. If the energy of the spleen stops its lifting-up, but comes downward, it may then cause diarrhea and prolapse of the organs. The spleen relates to the muscle, four extremities. The luxury of the spleen is on the lips, while its opening is on the mouth. If one's muscles are strong, four extremities are active and quick, lips are in good color and the appetite is good. This indicates a normal function of the spleen. The saliva is the liquids of the spleen. B. SYMPTOMS. 1. Meridian: Pain or swelling on lower leg, emphysema, bloated abdomen, abdominal cramps, nausea, weak appetite, problems in evacuation, lack of energy, obesity. 2. Organ: Enlargement of the spleen, diabetes, pancreatitis, duodenal, ulcer, disorder of immune system, diarrhea. C. MUSIC THERAPY Hymns:

| | | 2. The Stomach with the Music. A. Physiology. The main function of the stomach is to receive and digest food. The Chinese say, "The stomach is the sea of water and food." The function of the stomach is also called "The energy of the stomach". Due to the requirement of sending the partially digested food from the stomach downward to the small intestine, the function of the stomach is normal when its energy is descending. If the energy is ascending, it may cause nausea, vomiting, belching and hiccups. The stomach and spleen act uniquely together for the functions of digestion and absorption. The Chinese have a saying, "The spleen and stomach are the source of health: the source of maturity." B. Symptoms. 1. Symptoms of the meridian include facial darkening or tanning, nasal draining, spistaxis, facial paralysis, blisters on the lips, swelling of the neck, sore throat, ascites, the feeling of coldness on the chest and belly, swelling and pain of the knee joint; and pain along the route of this meridian; such as chest, breast, inguinal canal, and the anterior aspect of the thigh, lateral aspect of the tibia, dorsum of the foot, and malfunction or no function of the middle toe. Febrile diseases, malaria and chilling. 2. Symptoms of the viscera: increasing hunger although strongly indigestive accompanied with distention because of indigestion, mania, mourning, and yawning. C. Music Therapy Hymns: 1. I want to be like Jesus by: T.O. Chisholm, D.L. Ives 2. It is well with my soul by: H.G. Spafford, P.P. Bliss Oriental Classics: 1. Sonata Op. 27 No. 14 C# Minor (Moonlight Sonata) by: Beethoven To tonify the Stomach is to select brighter melody with lighter texture in the higher register. To sedate the Stomach is to select murky melody with heavier texture in the lower register.
| | | 3. The Lung with the Music. A.Physiology. The lung's main function is to respire, to the lord the energy to main avenues and to exchange the gas outside and inside of the body. It also helps the heart to maintain the blood for normal circulation. It lords to calm down and to lower the energy. It also helps the spleen and the kidney to work together to the metabolism of liquid and water. It lords respiration and energy. Energy is the important material by which man can maintain his life activity. The lung lords the energy which means the energy of the body is totally lorded by the lung. The energy of the lung has two resources. First, it is the energy of the essence which comes from the spleen produced by food. Second, the energy "oxygen" is inhaled from outside, which is fresh oxygen. The two energies gather together in the lung and produce the functional activity of the body. On one hand, it maintains the respiration of the lung, making it exchange the gases inside ; on the other hand, ancestor energy comes from the lung into the heart and makes the blood circulate. Through the blood circulation, it distributes itself through the whole body and maintains the functional activity of each organ and viscera. According to the Chinese saying, "Although the circulation of the blood is lorded by the heart, it must be helped by the energy of the lung." B. Symptoms: 1. The symptoms of the Meridian: fullness of the chest, pain in the upper clavicle cavity, pain and feeling of cold in the middle and front part of the upper limb, hot or warm feeling of the palm, fever, and persperation, disorders of the skin, dry throat, unpleasant emotional state. 2. The symptoms of the organ: cough, asthma, distention of the lung, dyspnea, vexation, the color of the urine is yellow or dark brown, frequent urination with small volume, diarrhea, hemorrhoids. C.Music Therapy Hymns: 1. Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty by: Reginald Heber, John B. Dykes 2. Great is thy faithfulness by: T.O. Chisholm, W.M. Runyan Oriental Classics: 1. Fantasy No. 3 (D Minor) Koechel 397 by: Mozart To tonify the lung is to select bright melody with lighter texture in the higher register. To sedate the lung is to select murky melody with heavier texture in the lower register.
| | | 4. The Large Intestine with the Music
| | | 5. The Liver with the Music
| | | 6. The Gall Bladder with the Music A. Physiology The gallbladder has two functions. Its primary function is to store and continuously excrete bile to the intestines which aids digestion. This function of the gallbladder belongs to one of the six viscera and it does not directly connect to the outside. In this respect it is unlike the stomach and the intestines which receive and excrete food often. Therefore, in Chinese Natural Medicine it is also categorized as a "wonderful and permanent viscera." B.Symptoms: 1. Meridian - headache, pains of the outer canthus, the shin, along the course of the meridian, low function of the fourth toe, pain and heat on the external sides, sweating, cold, malaria, swelling in the axilla, and lymph glands, lifeless face, abnormal blood pressure. 2. Organ - stones, gallbladder infection. C. Music Therapy. Hymns: 1. What a Friend we have in Jesus by: J.M. Scrivan, C.C. Converse 2. Nearer, My God to Thee by: Sarah F. Adams, Lowell Mason Oriental Classics: 1. The Prelude of Yin Jian Classic by: Erhammaha 2. The Sound of the Evening by: Xuia Tian Su Western Classics: 1. Sonata Op. 54 No. 22 F Major by: Beethoven 2. Sonata Op. 57 No. 23 F Minor by: Beethoven To tonify the Gall Bladder is to select brighter melody with lighter texture in higher register. To sedate the Gall Bladder is to select murkier melody with heavier texture in lower register.
| | | 7. The Heart with the Music. A.Physiology The heart is very important among the five "organs" and the six "viscera." Its main function is to control blood and the vessels. The heart makes the blood circulate in the vessels so it can transport nutrients to other organs allowing them to maintain their normal activities. According to the theory of natural Medicine, the heart organ lords the mental condition, the consciousness and thinking activity of the brain. In the sense of Natural Medicine the heart does not only involve the organic heart, bu tit also involves the activity of the cerebral cortex. For this reason it is said that the heart is the most important among the "organs" and "viscera." The heart lords the blood and vessels, therefore the luxury of the heart shows on the face. Its opening is on the tongue. The heart controls the dynamics of circulation. The face and the tongue reflect the condition of the blood. "The heart when on the body, it is the heart; but when on the face, it is the luxury of expression of the heart." Because the heart's opening is on the tongue, the Chinese judge the function of the heart, (strong or weak), from the pulse, face, and the tongue. If the pulsation is normal, it is tender but strong. Therefore the complexion of the face will be smooth and rich and very bright. If the tongue is pink and very bright, the Chinese say this is the appearance of the normal functioning of the heart. The heart lords the mental condition, consciousness, and thinking activity of the brain, making this another important function. The Chinese say, " The heart is the place of mentality." Happiness, worry, concern, pain, and caution are all related to the heart. If the spirit is very sound, having a clear and logical mind, the heart is functioning normally. Sweat is liquid of the heart and a kind of essence. Sweat is closely related to the function of the heart. Normal perspiration is also related to the heart. If the sweat glnd is not strong enough to hold the sweat, it is caused not only by the lowering of the lung energy, but by an insufficiency of the heart yang. If there is an insufficiency of yang, the patient's body reponds by an increase (flowing up) of the yang, producing more perspiration at night, so it is referred to as "night sweat." Four other factors that cause "night sweat" are: insufficiency of blood, the lung yin, kidney yin, and the heart yin. For treatment of profuse "day sweat" or "night sweat" the Chinese doctors use herbs or acupuncture for the warming of the heart yang or the nourishing of the heart yang. In certain types of diseases the doctor needs to cause the patient to perspire, so it is necessary to carefully differentiate the insufficiency of heart yang from the patient suffering from an insufficiency of heart yang or insufficiency of blood. B. Symptoms
1. Symptoms of the Meridian: Jaundice, pain along the flank, pain on the medial aspect of the arm and forearm, chilling, painful warm palm.. 2. Symptoms of the Organ: Pain in the chondriac region, dryness of throat, thirst. C. Music Therapy Oriental Classics: 1. Do Not Tighten the Horse Bridle by: Fu Sheu 2. Hurry Up (Mongolian Folk Song) by: Su Ma Western Classics: 1. Sonata Op. 53 No. 21 (C Major) by: Beethoven 2. Sonata Op. 111 No. 32 (C Minor) by: Beethoven To tonify the Heart is to select brighter melody with lighter texture in higher register. To sedate the Heart is to select murkier melody with heavier texture in lower register.
| | | 8. The Small Intestine with the Music A. Physiology. The main function of the small intestine is to receive partially digested food and divide the useful and waste materials. The food digested in the stomach passes on to be further digested in the small intestine, which absorbs the useful essential substances and transfers them to the whole body through the spleen. The dynamics of promoting that function the Chinese call the "Gate of Life" or "kidney yang" or "original yang", but the material of the base of this dynamics is the essence or "kidney yin" or "original yin." Therefore, the Chinese have this saying, "The kidney lords the fire of the gate of the life and the kidney store essence." The kidney also lords the liquid and water, balancing the metabolism of the water and the liquid of the body. The kidney stores essence. It lords the development and production of bodily life. Essence is the material base of the human life activity. The kidney stores essence and has two meanings. First, the essence of the mature, which is the essence produced from the organs and viscera. It means that it can nourish organs and the viscera, the limbs, the five organs of the face, and other structures. It includes the essence, blood and liquid. This essence is originally from the essential part of the fluid which maintains human life and nourishes every part of the human body and facilitates its development. Second, there is the essence of the premature, which divides into two parts. The first part is the material origin of the process of the development and production in the life activity. The Chinese call this the "base of the premature." The second part is the basic material of human reproduction. It is closely related to the male testes, prostrate, secretion glands and its associated ducts. For the female it includes the uterus, ovaries, and the ovarian ducts. These parts are lorded by the kidney. The essence of the premature and the mature are working mutually. &l
